update on Abby K.

We are in the middle of our mission assignments now. I am at Tenwek
hospital with two other nursing students, Cindy and Bri. It is really
cool to work in a mission-minded hospital. Their moto is "We treat,
Jesus heals." It really shows how they concern themselves with the
spiritual wellbeing of the patients as well as physical care. They
have a chaplain for every ward, and they pray before the day begins.
In surgery, they pray with the patient before they put them under
anesthesia. I am learning a lot about health care also. I have seen a
lot of cases that I don't see in America. The day we spent on the
medical ward, 80% of the patients were there for bacterial meningitis.
I dressed the wounds of Masai man who was mauled by a buffalo. We see
a lot of HIV positive patients, and those with opportunistic
infections.
Something that has been a challenge for me is the language barrier. I
came with the expectation that I would be telling people the Good News
and praying with patients and encouraging them. But I can't even talk
to them. Most don't speak English, some don't even speak Kiswahili,
they speak their tribal languages. (I know a grand total of 3 words in
Kipsigis, and 2 in Masai.) I am still trying to figure out what God is
trying to teach me, and what He is using me for. He moves in
mysterious ways.
Please continue to pray for the safety of our team and the work that
we are doing. Pray that we would be a blessing to someone, and that we
would be open to the lessons God has for us.
